Artist Statement

My practice centers around Abstraction which I predominately explore through the lens of contemporary painting. Through an expanded approach to surface and materials and a playfulness towards paintings history, my work seeks to generate dynamic painterly forms that reconfigure abstract painting in a contemporary context.

Drawing forms an important part of my practice in which the gestures, marks and forms of abstract painting are rendered slowly and carefully on paper. Working in the medium of drawing creates a certain distance and opens a space for contemplation on the nature of the painterly gesture. At the same time suggesting points of overlap with the surfaces, materials and actions of the everyday world. Recent work explores the parallels between the painterly gesture of abstract expressionism and the banal gestures made when using a smartphone.
